WHAT WE TREAT

Functional Neurological Disorders (FND)

What is FND?

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a condition where there is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system and how the brain and body send and receive signals. FND can result in a variety of physical, sensory, and cognitive symptoms that mimic other neurological conditions, such as stroke or epilepsy, but without the typical neurological damage.

How is FND Caused?

The exact cause of FND is not fully understood, but it is believed to be multifactorial, involving a complex interaction of biological, psychological, and social factors. Some potential contributing factors include:

  • Stress
  • Trauma
  • Decreased sensation
  • Abnormalities in brain function
  • Weakness or paralysis
  • Dystonia
  • Numbness
  • Problems with memory
  • Non-epileptic seizures
  • Speech difficulties
